Market Chatter: TC Energy Executive Resigns After Detailing Covert Lobbying Tactics
MT Newswires - Jun 26, 2024 1:34 PM EDT

01:34 PM EDT, 06/26/2024 (MT Newswires) -- TC Energy (TRP.TO, TRP) executive Liam Iliffe resigned from the company after being filmed detailing covert tactics to push governments to approve liquefied natural gas projects, the National Post reported on Wednesday.

According to the report, Iliffe, TC's director of operations for British Columbia, was recorded during two internal "Lunch and Learn" presentations detailing methods of influencing government to back LNG projects.

Tactics included "planting company staff in events to ask politicians public questions, ghostwriting briefing notes for bureaucrats to give to cabinet ministers, and even an encounter with a top government official in a supermarket produce section". the report said.

TC Energy senior vice president of external relations Patrick Muttart told the Post Iliffe's claims were exaggerated, untrue and unbelievable and that he took immediate action after seeing the video. Iliffe resigned from the company on June 17, the paper said.
