LIne 5

The only realistic alternative to the closing of line 5 would be to reactivate the old Portland Pipeline system and reverse Line 9 once again but that would yield only 240 Kbpd versus 540 kbpd required
It would also take many months to accomplish (at best) , time that Canada no longer has. Ditto for constructing offloading systems for crude by rail or even worse crude by truck which would only be symbolic at best and another constant reminder to the population of the complete ineptitude of our Federal Government !!

It has been inactive since 2016 when line 9 from Sarnia to Montreal was finally reversed towards Montreal ...more

Just one more thing I would like to add concerning crude pipelines. These lines were designed to service Crude oil refineries, each of which has been configured to meet their particular markets and the processing units designed for that. Hence each refinery schedules their own batches of various types of crudes through the lines. Each batch must be scheduled to its proper destination to be ...more

Well since  I started the subject and even though I am more than 40 years out of date, I doubt much has changed . Batch sizes were typically 75000 barrels each, so with say 18 million bpd floatind in the sysrem for an average 15 days say I calculate 3600 batches that must be tracked and dispatched each day , probably as complex as any busy airport. In the old days cartons of punch cards had ...more
