What happens to shorts who can't cover?

What happens to shorts who can't cover?For any short positions that didn't close last Friday, they are going to wake up to A LOT of hurt tomorrow.

My question is, if a person holding a short position can not cover, let's say due to not enough funds, what happens to the short position?

I would imagine they are forced to give the shares back, and maybe even sell shares of different asserts to get enough money to cover.

But what happens if they just don't have enough money or assets?

Just curious for curiosity sake.
