Newmont closes Newcrest...

...and prepares to riase $2 billion through mine / project divestments:

Coffee doesn't move the needle for them on the Gold front, and doesn't jibe with the increased Copper strategy. Easy to assume they'll sell.

they paid $19.2B USD i believe for Newcrest which has 50B lbs of copper and 120M ounces gold or approx. 115B lbs Cueq. They paid $19B --- or about $0.17 per Cueq lb. Not sure what % of the 115B lbs Cueq is actually capex paid and producing. To compare, WRN is trading at $0.008 per Cueq lb....but nothing producing of cousre.  Perhaps they paid $0.4 per Cueq lb producing and $0.01 per Cueq lb ...more

Sooner You state, ""Seems like the worst possible time to divest assets...."" For a company like Rio it has to be the best time to buy the Casino project ! Great timing for them ! M2

Perhaps Coffee is one asset Paul was talking about when he was discussing looking at assets to purchase.

I asked Paul the same a few weeks ago and it went unanswered. Here is the email I sent him:  Good day, Paul,    November 28th is soon upon. If RIO offers in the $9 to $15 range, might be good time to sell. Spin out? WRN offers to buy out Coffee from NEM. No secret that NEM wants to divest. Win-win for everybody.    Thoughts?  But, then again, there may be ...more

" We have hired a dedicated staff member to work with all three Metallic Group companies in fostering our First Nations relationships and have committed to regular meetings to build the repour with local communities. Granite Creek Copper (TSX-V: GCX; US-OTC: GCXXF), part of the Metallic Minerals Group, wants to attract a major company to consolidate a Yukon Territories area into a local copper giant.     Granite’s C$220 million ($162m) Carmacks project, some First Nations property and the past-producing Minto Metals mine would form a 30-year operation able to produce 2 billion lb. copper ...more

Paul probably didn't respond becauase you mentioned $9 - $15 for Rio offer...he probably immediately closed the email after seeing that. Sorry --- not reality.

Sooner, we don't know what the magic number is that secures a buyout.  You have consitently presumed it is $6 or less.  If that is the case, why hasn't Paul and the BoD announced a buyout for $500mm (about $3+ per share) or so? Do you really think RIO would not want to purchase gold ounces in-the-ground for less than $24 an ounce AND get the silver/copper/moly for free?!  ...more

I have previously stated I have given up on my $6USD prediction. As Clark has also previously stated, I'm sure the RIo guys laughed at Paul and his comment that the cheapest they could get WRN for was way back when they became engaged. That has been proven wrong in my opinon...as we are trading well below their initial buy in price as of today! How much did Newmont pay for Newcrest total ...more

Hi Sooner, we all agree that in the world of investing it is all about timing.  Take a look at our neighbour (Coffee Deposit) which was bought out at $520mm CAD or about $400mm USD.  They only have about 20% of the gold (and probably much less of the copper/silver).  Yes, the environment was different a few years ago when that buyout occurred, but sentiment is much like the weather, ...more
