According to WFIW radio in Fairfield, over 250 people turned out Tuesday night for an informational meeting about area oil companies seeking to lease land for the production of oil and gas in Wayne County. In the last 18 months, more than 800 oil and gas leases have been signed in Wayne County.
Producers are interested in utilizing horizontal drilling techniques and high pressure fracturing to produce natural gas from the New Albany Shale formation in Wayne County. The formation lies between 4,500 and 5,000 feet deep in Wayne County.
Speakers at Tuesday night's meeting at the First Christian Church in Fairfield included Laura Harmon, Assistant General Counsel with the Illinois Farm Bureau; Brad Richards, Executive Director of the Illinois Oil and Gas Association; Chris Penrose (pictured above speaking) and Clif Little, both Ohio State University Extension Educators and Associate Professors. An informational meeting earlier in the day in McLeansboro drew a crowd of about 100.
