I've read the news releases as they came out, no need to go back. The release makes it sound like CARA doesn't need a human reader to analyse and confirm that treatment is needed. However, Andre Larente clarified this for me; specialists are in fact needed to assess/read the image and confirm the need for treatment. Screening is the first stage of weeding out the good from the bad. If I recall correctly, IRIS claims that 35% of patients screened for DR prove to qualify for treatment. Whether 35% of patients are actually confirmed and referred to treatment is a different story. That number seems kind of high. I'm thinking that only a portion of that 35% actually proceeds to the next stage - visiting a specialist to receive treatment.
