Instead of me repeating myself, read about the concept of a halt from IIROC: "Trading halts are issued based on the principle that all investors should have the same timely access to important company information." Translation into plain English -> If they released the news right away (especially if it is big news) you will inevitably have a large percentage of investors being left behind because they didn't end up finding out about the information at the same time everyone else did. Once again, it is a concept of fairness as well as maximizing the amount of trading that will take place.
