Still picking on IMO Cold Lake

Cold Lake deep dive
Q3 2023
producing 129.8 kbpd
utilizing 3,261 active producing wells

Recall CSS, unlike SAGD, the producer and steam injector is the same well bore.

On a per well perspective that's 39.8 bpd per well  = 129.8k / 3,261 production

Water / Steam
and SOR @ 4.9

that's almost 200 barrels of water (heated into steam) per well
or 652K barrels of water/d (heated into steam) = 200 b h2o * 3,261 wells

Whampoa forgive me here, I am just a tad confused. I think you meant to type in CSP instead of CSS ? And you're saying (I think) that the SAGD process has the steam injector going down the same well bore not the CSP correct? If that is correct, and as I am not familiar with IMO's Cyclic Solvent process, how is their solvent applied ?. And if they got govt $10M towards developing that ...more

At a high level CSS insitu is first generation.  SAGD insitu is second generation.  All the other solvent assisted as a group is third generation, now generically called SA-SAGD or similar.  When commercials, AXE CTI RFXL is fourth generation.  At one time IMO and other CSS operators had graphics of their CSS on their website, but no more. Probably have to dig to find.  ...more

CSS uses the same vertical hole. They usually pump steam down the hole for a period of time to heat the bitumen. After pumping steam for approx 3-4 weeks they stop and using the same vertical well pump the bitumen out of the reservoir. They keep pumping until the heat drops to a level where the bitumen can no longer flow and repeat with steam injection.

So Whampoa, I am still not clear, is 'Cyclic Steam Stimulation' (CSS) their way of describing an actualla solvent (CSProcess) that goes down the same bore hole in addition to the actual steam that also helps to soften the bitumen? I think this is where it's a bit confusing with the different terminology being used. In short and simple, are thery still applying a solvent into the ...more

The C$10M ERA funding to an IMO C$100M project was called CSProcess I beleive upon commercialization its now called LASER (I'll look it up later) which is solvent injection via modern horizontal pipe (I guess services several vertical CSS wells). So, no it does not use the existing CSS vertical wells. LASER a bolt on to their (IMO (in my opinion, ha) much inefficient) Cyclic Steam ...more

OK Whampoa I finally got it ...duuuhhh? I know :o) Thanks. You do a lot of researching and digging as I assume you have some previous background in O&G and it's appreciated. You should send some of your findings and suggestions to Axe. I am sure Geoff would respond when he can, they probably don't know everything that's going on with every company in the huge O&G industry ...more
