You ask what is the point of this, but the truth is in my experience this is a very effective point. It always shocks me that people could be this reactive to a manipulated sale, but in the morning, you see how it is effective all the time. Same kind of stuff happens all the time before the open too as players put in false bids higher. The big banks see the market orders.
