This is one of the many major issues with consistently shorting.  The best a shorter can hope for is to make an average 10 to 20% on a trade (even that figure is being incredibly generous).  Everything could be going well for a shorter for a year or two.

Then "bang", just one major short squeeze and the shorters career is over..........bankruptcy. 

The probability that a major short squeeze is going to happen is close to 100% at some point in a shorters career.  Losses for the shorter are unlimited, the max a shorter can hope for is 100% gain, that's bad math.

Happened to the homegamer shorters.............happens everyday.
