The world is swimming in nickelIt is the fifth-most common element on earth and occurs extensively in the earth's crust and core. Nickel, along with iron, is also a common element in meteorites. Nickel occurs naturally in soil and water.

Why is nickel so common?
 
In 1883, large deposits of nickel were discovered in the Sudbury Basin in Canada, which is where about 30 percent of the world's nickel is mined today. It is believed that this large deposit of nickel is due to an ancient meteor impact.
