The Western Star

CAPE ST. GEORGE — Plans to expand storage capacity at the Garden Hill South oil and gas project site have been registered for environmental assessment with the provincial Department of Environment and Conservation.

The proposal, submitted by PDI Production Inc., is to increase the storage capacity for the drilling and production program on the Port au Port Peninsula, which was registered by the Canadian Imperial Venture Corporation (CIVC) in 2001.

To meet its amended requirements, the proponent intends to construct a 10,000-barrel (roughly 1.59 million-litre), above-ground storage tank, with the capacity to build a second tank of the same volume in the future as demand may require.

In addition, a properly-designed containment berm will be constructed to house the tanks.
The proposed site is within the boundary of the town of Cape St. George, which is roughly 60 kilometres west of Stephenville.

Public comments on the amended plans are due by May 20 and Environment and Conservation Minister Charlene Johnson’s decision is due by May 30.
