No local community is going to sit idly by if they think that their water could be polluted with cyanide or other harmful chemicals. The environomentalists and NGO are constantly sticking their two cents in. The government will not "crush" their citizens for the benefit of a big foreign multi-national.
Just because these people live in Ecuador does not mean they are desparate or stupid. Look at all the convincing and bargaining that Canadian companies have to go through where the indian First Nations are concerned.
If Kinross was going to build a cyanide leaching plant on your street, would you sit idly by. If a garbage dump was going to be put into your neighbourhood would you sit idly by. I don't think so.
