From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rail bridge over the Garden River.

The Garden River is a river in the Algoma District of Ontario which empties into the St. Marys River east of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

The river gets its name from vegetable gardens kept by the Ojibwa people in this area. The Garden River First NationReserveis located in this area. The reserve was created as part of theRobinson-Huron treaty signed in 1850. The leader at Garden River at thetime, Chief Shingwaukonce, also known as Shingwauk or "Little Pine", had an influence on thecreation of this treaty. Shingwauk's vision of a "teaching wigwam" toprovide education for native peoples was later distorted into the residential school program.
