That may be true but it could literally be 10 years or more before this plot of land is developed. Selling just 'realizes' the loss. The money is still gone because no one is willing to pay this price for the shares. If you bought intel during the dot com bust, you are still here today licking your wounds 2 decades later because the stock essentially never recovered if you don't include dividends.
