I just wondering where you were a couple of days ago........ Been doing my DD, and have now included the karstification in my "model". Along with heavy uplift/subsidence-related erosion of limestone, of course.
Found some interesting historical background as well. Mr E. Billings suggested looking for coal precisely in the strata it was found, in 1859.

Pages 16-21 are the most interesting, from a coal standpoint. Seems to suggest Upper Cretaceous coal as well.
