This has been an interesting thread with some interesting commentary.  Yes in order for a long term share price move we either need liquidity to decrease or a lot of small investors to want to buy the stock.  Perhaps Canadian pride may have a part to play, though I daresay greed is a a strong motivator too.

If we look at long sustained share price moves we see that generally volume is steady.  Have a look at weekly charts especially.  (see for ex CEN.TO).  There's lots of books out there that explain this phenomenon but the fact is that it generally holds.  So until such time as general people want to buy the stock (long after the institutions have made their play I might add)  the price tends to just bobble around.  The key for us as people that want to make money, is to recognise when a constant flow of new investor others might be buying this stock, and, of course, recognise when this ends, or when the institutional support declines.
