Reflections

ReflectionsBased on the past, even if the Haida Council recommends the project, it still has to be voted upon by the citizens. Last time there were concerns expressed about interest rate risk on any debt taken out. The impact on the marine environment, during/after construction, fishing livelihood and bird migration routes. Also the size of the project. Back in the past it was 110 turbines, now maybe only 30 max. The presentations back then were mainly on the project and not spin off benefits of being connected to an electrical grid. (Maybe a new sawmill was mentioned). I don't expect large industries on the island, but maybe something on the mainland. The Lax Kw'alaams and Metlakatla First Nations were also involved. This where the transmission interconnection point was planned, just south of Prince Rupert, as the company required tranmission access permission from the First Nations. Trying to envision a more encompassing plan which is not only about the windfarm, but spin off projects. All partipicants should meet together to come up with something the citizenry can vote upon. The decision arises as to invest, or to only receive % of profits/rent or a combo of both. Without any investment, can still have the connection to the grid. A question is, will onshore transmission lines have to be upgraded to accept more power flow. That may be up to BC Hydro, but I'm not sure. Back in 2010, there was no EPA when it went to vote. Would be best to get that in writing and not only paper assumptions, before any vote this time. The developer back then, I am not sure. With Northland at least I have confidence. Also the business set up proposed, seemed somewhat complicated, (at least as I saw it). There was discussion about carbon credit income related specifically to the project, but this idea can extend to a broader application--CFN-Carbon-Credit-info-brochure-.pdf (coastalfirstnations.ca) I'm aware there are important dear to the heart issues which keeps everyone busy. But one thing is for sure, a vision for the future is always present. This project should be no different.
