The thinking was

....around for many years. Additional power for the NW region must either be provided locally or via a new multi-billion dollar transmission line. Local power source would be both practical and cost-effective.

But the above assumed a fast growing commercial and industrial demand. I have no idea what initiatives in addition to LNG projects are being considered for the region. A fertilizer plant. Maybe a hydrogen hub.

Further north, there are future mining projects (Golden Triangle), but BC Hydro has the area covered by the 344km Northwest Transmission Line.

The Terrace to Kitimat Transmission Project to get electricity to a LNG project. I think it's on hold for the moment.

The above transmission lines electricity comes in via that long 600km line. Is it nearing it's capacity? Only BC Hydro knows.

Will a regional source of renewable energy be considered? Current infrastructure will still provide the back-up in case it's needed.

A look into the future is required by all involved.

If large LNG are allowed to burn natural gas for electricity, why not build a gas generation facility to service the electrical requirement of the NW region. Reliable and don't require back-up provisions. Maybe could even reduce emissions by using some technology, but it would not be cheap. However, how likely would a gas generation facility scenario be, in light of (Clean BC) climate action ...more
