For further understanding as to humans using their eyes and brains to see and visually sense the world around them : The pupil changes diameter in response to light conditions. It is the lens that changes shape to see distance, whether far away or very near. But as an object comes nearer, the pupil shrinks in diameter and the eyes focus more closely together ( producing a very slightly cross-eyed effect).
