Volume

I see RBC on the buy side across the tsx and all the lesser Canadian exchanges. Not bad volume of 310,000 so far today, and heads up to dozen/dozen .... USA trading is closed today so not only nothing going on there but all cdn trading is lighter, typically, if the USA is closed when CDN is open. And yeah, yeah, yeah, that's peanuts compared to your 10 million shares

Moe  So the top number on stockwatch is the total for all the exhanges ...310k volume  So I count 7 exchanges  why all those 7 exchanges ? Why the need for all those ? wouldnt 1 be enough ^?

That question shows lack of understanding DD.  All the exchanges exist to facilitate liquidity, and each exchange offers one advantage or another PURE, CBOE (was NEO), CSE etc all serve a purpose to allow more companies access to public markets and trading platforms. Some companies simply do not qualify for the TSX or its venture arm.....but can trade on another exchange Be glad there is ...more

Yes I clearly dont understand.  To me 1 would be ok  not sure why 7 different exchanges are needed or the benefit of having it this way.

The tsx isn't a government department or a utility. It never was. It's a for profit company. You can buy stock in the toronto stock exchange if you want. I wouldn't. Symbol is 'X' for the TMX group. It has a market cap of nearly $9 Billion. Revenue in 2022 was $1.9 Billion. That's a LOT of fees paid by everyone that trades shares on the tsx or lists their company on the tsx ...more

Your broker's computer would automatically check and select the exchange for the best bid. Hopefully. Or more likely, if it's a big broker like TD or BMO, they execute/match your trade on their own electronic books. Ever wonder how they can confirm your trade instantly, or within seconds,  of you pushing the button? They either instantly match your buy with another client's sell ...more

Okay, last old story from the old guy today. You know all that "level 2" info on shares bid or offered at different prices up and down from the last trade? Those are actual shares you can buy or sell at that price, as offered by an amalgamation of all the traders loading shares into the book. It used to be very helpful indicative info but now with so many alternate and electronic ...more

I use TDWaterhouse for my personal investments and RBCdirect for my corporate investments. I am always informed when they sell to me as a principal.... Never looked really closely at this since I used to watch Marty Stephens trade on account of Gardner Ross every week...and he always insisted he made big money doing so

LOL. I had to google your reference. ok I probably shouldn't admit it , but, I've never watched that show more than 5 minutes here and there. Crummy cast, not very realistic, and way too much talking about their feelings .  I did watch Wall Street a few times because greed is good. It's fairly realistic for that decade. That movie and Alec Baldwin in glenngary glen ross was ...more

I got to meet Kim Huffman (Ann) at an talent agent's christmas party back then ...she was Kim's manager.....and got to tell Kim "You blowed up real good" Wall Street IS good and GGR is absolutely fantastic. Always Be Closing. The scene where Pacino shuffles the mark out the door to extend the cool off time is awesome. And you are right. Every "sales agent"...even ...more

The other aspect of investing that changed the most from 45 years ago when I started is the the shares. It used to be you had a physical share certificate, piece of paper, issued by the company itself as proof of your ownership. There were a couple dozen large stock brokers, banks, and insurance companies that physically kept your shares in their vault or cage. That eventually became "book ...more
