Tembec Inc.'s high-yield specialty pulp mill at Matane, entrance to Quebec's Gaspe region, is getting a new lease on life.
The company said yesterday it is investing $25.7 million to upgrade the effluent treatment system and install an electric boiler to replace the old heavy-oil-fired equipment.
The federal government and Quebec are funding most of the cost. But the Matane mill, acquired by Tembec in less competitive times in 1999, will become "cost-competitive in global markets for years to come," CEO James Lopez said.
