The National Post reports in its Saturday, Nov. 11, edition that Peru's mining unions are preparing a national strike to show opposition to government proposals to change profit sharing plans and other issues, the president of the National Federation of Mining, Metallurgy and Steel Workers said Friday. A Reuters dispatch to the Post reports that federation president Luis Castillo said, "On Nov. 22 and 23 we have a national session in Lima with delegates from all the country's unions and we'll define the start date for the strike." Mr. Castillo made his comments after a meeting with representatives of Peru's biggest mining unions. Mining is at the heart of Peru's economy, says Reuters. The Andean nation is the third-biggest world producer of copper and of zinc. It ranks fifth in gold. The most recent national mining strike lasted 48 hours. The strike was staged in April, 2004, to protest former president Alejandro Toledo's labour policies. Among the big miners operating in Peru are United States companies Phelps Dodge and Newmont Mining. Canadian senior miners Barrick Gold and Teck Cominco also operate in Peru. Mexico's Grupo Mexico also has operations in Peru.
