China demand lift copper to 10 months highs,,,,,China demand lifts copper to high
July 28, 2009

Copper prices surged to 10-month highs yesterday, boosted by growing optimism about economic growth and demand in China, the largest consumer of industrial metals.

Copper hit a session high of $5 646 (R44 037) a ton and was at $5 636 at noon in London, compared with $5 520 at the close on Friday. The metal has gained 80 percent this year.

Much of that gain has been built on Chinese buying, which analysts say is strong because of fiscal stimuli.

"China is throwing off its connection with Western demand," said analyst John Meyer.

"Chinese demand is real, there is strong demand for copper concentrates, partly because of a lack of scrap."

Aluminium futures on the London Metal Exchange rose to $1 855 a ton, up 40 percent since February and the highest since last November. - Reuters
