let me see an electric vehicle pull 160,000 lbs up an 8% grade . Yeah thats what I thought....

Actually you may see that way sooner than you think. A Calgary based company may make it possible. They are doing some impressive work on the torque issues. I do not think it is an either or situation. There will still be lots of demand for oil ...peak demand may still be a long way off. I will be exceptionally pleased if my "old school" energy do as well as my green positions...kind of ...more

Actually take a look at trains, those are electric powered, the electric motor is powered by diesel engines ofc, but electric motors have a LOT more capacity for torque than any fossil fueled engine. It would be a matter of providing the juice to that electric motor for longer than a couple hundred km to make hauling heavy loads and loads on grades.
