Principal CAD/EDA Engineer

R & D – San Jose, California
 

We are seeking a highly motivated CAD/EDA Engineer to help power forward our growth.   The ideal candidate will have skills and experience both in CAD software support and physical design.  You will use your expertise in from end design software support and backend chip assembly at Spectra7 to help in the design and tape-out of our growing product line, working with both the circuit design team and the physical design team.   Additionally, you will manage the physical design team if you possess proven leadership skills.  Your skills and talents will ensure that our future chips are verified and implemented to meet their rigorous performance specifications. 

 Responsibilities

  •  Maintain and provide tool support for analog and digital front-end IC design tools such as: Virtuoso, Spectre, SpectreRF, VerilogXL, VerilogAMS, Conformal and Affirma
  • Maintain and provide EDA tool support for physical design tools such as Assura, Quantus QRC, Calibre and Virtuoso Digital Implementation XL (VDIXL)
  • Maintain design databases for various chips and support revision control software
  • Install and maintain PDKs from various foundries and work with foundries for support
  • Work with the layout team on floor-planning and physical implementation including place and route of digital circuitry and custom analog layout completion
  • Maintain and ensure adherence to design flow and verification procedures for physical verification, including LVS, DRC, ERC at a block and full-chip level
  • Complete tape-out procedures for internal design flows and release of .gds to foundries
  • Participate in design reviews with the design team to identify problems and issues in physical implementation
  • Document physical implementations of chips
  • Interface and manage relationships with software tool vendors, including price negotiation and cost management of EDA tools for the entire design team
  • Interface and manage relationship with contract IT support company
  • Management of layout design team, for a qualified candidate

Qualifications, Experience, Skills and Education

Education: MSEE or higher

Experience

  •  12+ years in a EDA/CAD support role for analog circuit IC design
  • Experience negotiating pricing for software tools with CAD/EDA tool vendors required
  • Experience managing physical design and layout teams a plus
  • Experience maintaining EDA tools and design environment for an analog IC design flow
  • Experience supporting analog IC designers in resolving simulation issues
  • Experience having implemented and/or maintained rule sets/decks for interconnect extraction tools such as Calibre, Assura and EMX
  • Experience in floor-planning chips with highly analog content
  • Experience performing place and route for digital blocks
  • Experience working with layout designers to implement fully custom analog IC layout
  • Experience having performed tape-out procedures for chips in volume production
  • Experience working in CMOS processes required, experience with BiCMOS processes a plus

Work Habits, Skills and Knowledge

  •  Positive personality willing to interact with the design and layout teams to resolve software issues encountered during the design flow
  • Thorough knowledge of operation of standard Cadence IC design tools
  • Expertise with other tools such as Calibre and EMX a plus
  • Good communication skills for interaction with the team and for documentation
  • Knowledge of analog IC layout techniques such as matching and minimizing parasitic effects form interconnect
  • Knowledge of scripting languages such as perl and SKILL
  • Knowledge and proficiency with Cadence schematic entry tools and simulators such as Spectre to assist in debugging simulation issues with design team is a plus
