According to DELL, Mixed Reality tethered to a PC is just getting started. They have no plans for any type of "wireless" device. As a matter of fact, they say that VR/MR screen resolution has to go Higher; Camera resolution has to go Higher.
They plan to put out more powerful, less expensive PC's to help drive the much higher bandwidth demands that high-end VR/MR will be needing over the next many years
And they say the price and weight needs to come down. Wireless headsets will always be lower-end devices. They will always be more expensive. They will Never be able to keep up with the bandwidth needed for quality, high-end VR/MR:
"The price needs to come down, the weight needs to come down."
"Users aren't spending loads of time in VR yet due to the low resolution."
"There is far too much data coming in for a human to comprehend. You will need some sort of back-end to process the data and display what is relevant."
"In a month and a half since Windows MR added SteamVR support, we've seen 4% of users are on Windows MR headsets. We're excited to see that much share in such a short span of time." "CF: Where do you feel the timeline is for mainstream penetration of VR?
G: Here we have to give Microsoft some credit for Windows MR. With one HDMI connection and one USB connection, alongside inside out tracking, their API is nearly plug and play." https://www.forbes.com/sites/charliefink/2018/02/26/dell-vr-plays-its-hand/#26847b3e695b
