Date: Friday, April 22, 2011
A moratorium on exploration licenses in South Africa’s Karoo Basin where several firms, including Shell, have been searching for shale gas.The South African cabinet said there would be a moratorium due to the techniques used in recovering shale.
“The cabinet has endorsed the decision by the Department of Minerals to invoke a moratorium on licenses in the Karoo where fraccing is proposed," the government said in a statement.
Companies like Sasol, Falcon Oil and Gas, and Shell are among the companies who want to tap the Karoo’s shale potential however, they have all faced opposition from conservationists and locals concerned about the impact of hydraulic fracturing.

I'M not Trying to Add any negative sentiment hydraulic fraccing ,I'm sure we all know there is environmental concern
[just like in any industry there are the environmentalists ]
But did think it was of interest to see that fraccing is now being proposed world wide as a viable and profitable method or tapping into the vast shale reserves around the globe.
Also of interest to see Shell oil is involved in fraccing in South Africa
