Finally a REE project!!I like it! Take a look from the news release...
About Big Beaverhouse rare-earth elements property
The Big Beaverhouse property consists of 12 claims (180 units -- 460.8hectares) located 450 kilometres north of Thunder Bay in NorthwesternOntario. The property can be accessed by float plane or boat in thesummer and a winter road in the winter. An all-weather road andinfrastructure is located 40 kilometres southwest at Goldcorp Inc.'sproducing Musselwhite gold mine.
Partial rare-earth elements analyses conducted by the OntarioGeological Survey on historical drill holes on the property in the1980s has reported up to 3,200 parts per million La+Ce+Nd (Sage 1982).Of significance is the documentation of loparite [(Ce, Na, Ca) TiO3] inthe complex (Platt 1994). Loparite may contain up to 34 weight per centtotal rare-earth elements oxides (TREO) and is an important ore mineralfor the rare-earth elements in Russia. Other historical data reveal upto 5.5 weight per cent Nb2O5 over 1.7 metres and up to 18.9 weight percent P2O5. Drilling in the 1960s, carried out for niobium, intersecteda 98-metre-thick magnetite-apatite-rich unit near the centre of thecomplex. Such units could contain elevated rare-earth elements, whichwill be investigated. Apatite contains up to 3.3 weight per cent totalrare-earth elements in carbonatite-alkalic complexes elsewhere.
Nd =
Neodymium magnets
Neodymium magnets are the strongest permanent
magnets known -
Nd2Fe14B. These magnets are cheaper, lighter, and stronger than
samarium-cobalt magnets. Neodymium magnets appear in products such as
microphones, professional
loudspeakers, in-ear
headphones,
guitar and
bass guitarpick-ups and computer
hard diskswhere low mass, small volume, or strong magnetic fields are required.Neodymium magnet electric motors have also been responsible for thedevelopment of purely electrical model aircraft within the first decadeof the 21st century, to the point that these are displacing internalcombustion powered models internationally. Likewise, due to this
highmagnetic-flux capacity, it is heavily used in the electric motors ofhybrid automobiles and in the electricity generators of commercial windturbine generators.
La =
Lanthanum
amount of La required per Prius vehicle!!
As most of the hybrides cars use nickel-metal hydride batteriesa massive quantities of lanthanum is required for the production ofhybrid automobiles. A typical hybrid automobile battery for a Toyota Priusrequires 10 to 15 kg (22-33 lb) of lanthanum. As engineers push thetechnology to increase fuel mileage, twice that amount of lanthanumcould be required per vehicle. [11][12]
Ce = Cerium
Cerium is a component in misch-metal (German for mixed–metal), which is used in the manufacture of:
· Pyrophoric alloys for cigarette lighters.
Making aluminium alloys and in some steels and irons.
· In cast iron it opposes graphitisation and produces a malleable iron
In steels it removes sulphides and oxides and completely degasifies.
· In stainless steel it is used as a precipitation-hardening agent.
Inmagnesium alloys for castings it is used from anywhere between 3 to 4%with 0.2 to 0.6% zirconium, both of these refine the grain and givesound casting of complex shapes. It also adds heat resistance tomagnesium castings.
A major technological application for Cerium(III) oxide is a catalytic converterfor the reduction of CO emissions in the exhaust gases from motorvehicles. In particular, cerium oxide is added into Diesel fuels.Another important use of the cerium oxide is a hydrocarbon catalyst in self cleaning ovens, incorporated into oven walls and as a petroleum cracking catalyst in petroleum refining. [6]
Cerium(IV) oxideis considered one of the most efficient agents for precision polishingof optical components. Cerium compounds are also used in themanufacture of
glass, both as a component and as a decolorizer. For example, cerium(IV) oxide in combination with
titanium(IV) oxide gives a golden yellow color to glass; it also allows for selective absorption of
ultraviolet light in glass. Cerium oxide has high refractive index and is added to
enamel to make it more opaque.
