Nuclear Power
The crisis in Japan continues. It is having major repercussions around the globe. Government and energy
authorities in some countries seem to be panicking. For instance, China has said that it is suspending
approvals for any new nuclear power plants, including those in the preliminary development stages.
Let’s put a few things into perspective. The Fukushima plant is more than 40 years old, and it does not
have the same level of protection as a modern plant, for instance, the thickness of the outer containment
walls. In addition, emergency power systems at Fukushima were vulnerable to flooding, let alone a
tsunami.
If Fukushima was a modern nuclear power plant, the problems it is facing would not exist.
