Uzbekistan has raised the price of gas it exports to Tajikistan, the Oil & Gas Eurasia news agency on Friday reported Tajik state-run gas concern Tojiktranzgas as saying.
The price of gas will increase from $227.85 per 1,000 cubic meters to $249.
"The price of imported Uzbekistan gas is calculated by the European formula which takes into account changes in the world price for fuel oil and gasoil, the price of which has risen in the first quarter of this year," the news agency quoted Tojiktranzgas as saying by way of explaining the price hike.
Gas prices are set on a quarterly basis.
Russia also increased the price of gas to Tajikistan on April 1 by imposing an excise duty on the fuel.
In light of the price hikes, Tajik Energy Minister Sherali Gul said on Friday that Tajikistan must focus on developing its domestic gas production.
"We must increase the volumes of domestic gas natural productions," the AsiaPlus.tj Tajik news service reported Gul as saying.
"But this takes time, because hydrocarbon deposits in Tajikistan occur at depths ranging from 5 to 7 kilometers (3-4 miles)."
Development of hydrocarbon reserves are already in progress, he noted.
"A subsidiary of Russia’s Gazprom launched drilling operation in Shahrinav district at the end of last year and Tethys Petroleum Tajikistan will launch drilling operations in southern Tajikistan this year.
