Victhom organizes clinical advisory board, holds meeting 2009-02-18 12:12 EST - News Release Mr. Nader Kameli reports VICTHOM ANNOUNCES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A CLINICAL ADVISORY BOARD Victhom Human Bionics Inc. held its first clinical advisory board (CAB) meeting in Montreal, Canada, on Feb. 13, 2009. The CAB consists of representatives from multiple medical specialties, including physiatry, neurology and neurosurgery. The CAB's primary objective is to provide professional expertise and guidance to the company as it continues to invest in clinical activities for its implantable neurostimulation devices for the treatment of gait disorders. Nader Kameli, chief operating officer of Victhom's Neurobionix division, commented: "We are delighted to be working with a group of clinicians who are so preeminent in their respective fields. We look forward to engaging them frequently as we continue to build upon our product portfolio designed to treat gait disorders." The current members of the CAB include: Dr. John Chae, MD Dr. Chae is associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) and biomedical engineering at Case Western Reserve University. He received his bachelor of science and master's in engineering from Duke University and Dartmouth College, respectively. He received his MD from the New Jersey Medical School and clinical training in PM&R from Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation of the New Jersey Medical School. He completed the rehabilitation medicine scientist training program fellowship at Case Western Reserve University. He is director of research for the department of PM&R and associate director of clinical affairs for the Cleveland Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) Center. His research is funded by the NIH and focuses on the application of FES for neuroprostheses, neural plasticity and shoulder dysfunction in hemiplegia. Dr. Alberto Esquenazi, MD Dr. Esquenazi is chairman and professor at the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at MossRehab, which is part of the Albert Einstein Healthcare Network. He also holds appointments as the director, Gait and Motion Analysis Laboratory, clinical director, Regional Amputee Centre, chief, Prosthetics and Orthotic Clinic. He is board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation and a member of the task force on medical rehabilitation research for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Dr. Esquenazi received his medical degree at the National Autonomous University of Mexico School of Medicine in Mexico City. He served his residency at Temple University School of Medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine, the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics and a charter member of the North American Society of Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis. Dr. Brian Kopell, MD Dr. Kopell is currently assistant professor of neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he specializes in the neuromodulation and functional neurosurgical treatment of various functional neurological maladies such as movement, pain and psychiatric disorders. Dr. Kopell holds an MD from the New York University School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. Dr. Kopell's fellowships were completed at the University Hospital in Zurich, Cleveland Clinic Foundation and University Hospital in Ankara. Dr. Kopell's special research interests include new applications of neurostimulation technologies and functional imaging. Dr. Michael O'Dell, MD Dr. O'Dell is the chief of clinical services, department of rehabilitation medicine at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Centre and professor of clinical rehabilitation medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, his residency in PMR at the hospital of University of Pennsylvania, and completed his fellowship in brain Injury and trauma at Mediplex-Rehab in Camden, N.J. Dr. O'Dell is nationally known for his clinical expertise, education and research in the area of neurological rehabilitation. Dr. Kanakadurga R. Poduri, MD Dr. Poduri is an associate professor and chair of the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Currently, Dr. Poduri serves as the medical director of PM&R services at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY. She is also the program director for the PM&R residency program at the University of Rochester. She graduated from Karnatak Medical College in Hubli, India, received her MD degree from the board or regents of the University of Rochester and completed her residency training at the University of Rochester, where she is also a fellowship trained in geriatric rehabilitation. Dr. Poduri is a diplomat of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, American Academy of Pain Management and she is subspecialty certified in spinal cord injury medicine. Her research work presentations and publications are in the areas of stroke, brain injury, spinal cord, amputations and hypertension. Dr. Richard Zorowitz, MD Dr. Zorowitz is the chief, department of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center as well as associate professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Zorowitz earned his medical degree at Tulane University and completed his residency at the rehabilitation institute of Chicago, Northwestern University. He is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R). Among his appointments, Dr. Zorowitz serves as chairman of the rehabilitation and recovery advisory board and professional advisory committee of the National Stroke Association and co-chairman of the standing scientific committee on stroke rehabilitation of the American Stroke Association. His research interests include stroke rehabilitation outcomes, dysphagia, spasticity and the hemiplegic shoulder. Dr. Frank Silver, MD Dr. Silver is a professor of medicine in the division of neurology at the University of Toronto. He graduated from the faculty of medicine at the University of Toronto in 1978, and completed a neurology residency in Toronto in 1983. After a two-year fellowship at the Cerebrovascular Research Centre at the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia, Dr. Silver returned to Toronto to be on staff at the Toronto General Hospital. Dr. Silver is currently the director of the University Health Network's Stroke Program and the medical director of the Toronto West Stroke Region. Dr. Silver's academic interests are in the areas of stroke management and improving stroke care delivery through regional organized care. He has been involved in the implementation and monitoring of many clinical trials in stroke. He is currently on the board of the Canadian Stroke Consortium. Dr. Silver was a past theme leader in the Canadian Stroke Network. He is a co-principal investigator of the registry of the Canadian Stroke Network and founded Ontario's Telestroke program.
