Aswat al-Iraq - 6/9/2013 7:04 PM

ARBIL/ Aswat al-Iraq: Premier Nouri al-Maliki said, in a joint press conference with Kurdish region president Masoud Barzani, that "government will hold general census during this year to solve disputed areas, calling the parliament to legislate the provincial administrative boundaries' law.

On the other hand, Barzani confirmed that Maliki's visit is "the start for solving difference", disclosing they agreed to "activate the work of the joint committees to cordially solve the problems, on the basis of the Iraqi constitution".

Maliki added that "it was agreed to solve Peshmarga questions and activating Article 140 of the constitution which need hold a general census, that to be made during this year to solve disputed areas questions.

"Radical solutions of problems need positive atmospheres and honest understandings to build trust as a start for any action", he confirmed.

Premier Maliki pointed out the "importance of pacification in Iraq, in general, and the central government with Arbil".

"Both Barzani and myself have the magic stick to solve pending questions", he stressed.

Premier Maliki welcomed the formation of Halabcha as a new province, "but it needs legal frameworks".

Earlier, Premier Maliki warned against sectarian strife in the region and its effects on Iraq, pointing "necessity of joint efforts to avoid it not to touch Iraq".

On the other side, Kurdish region president Masoud Barzani welcomed Maliki's visit, describing it as "important mission as a start for solving all differences and create a state of understanding between the two sides".

"We have agreed to solve them cordially, on the basis of the constitution, and cooperate to solve all questions that may face Iraq, in general.", Barzani confirmed.

Aswat al-Iraq correspondent described the atmosphere of the press conference as "cordial".

Both leaders were smiling at the results of the talks, held here today.

Comment: reading between the lines, it is possible that Maliki is agreeing to work with Barzini to resolve contentious issues in exchange for Kurdish support in the next parlimentary election (I stress the word possible).

Best,

JG
