Berkshire Benefits as Buffett Wagers on U.S. Housing

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-02/berkshire-benefits-as-buffett-wagers-on-u-s-housing.html

Buffett added to holdings of Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC), the largest U.S. home lender, bought real-estate brokers and bid on mortgage assets of bankrupt Residential Capital LLC as he bets on a rebound in housing in the world’s largest economy. Rather than spend his company’s cash pile on European companies after a 2008 trip to the region, he made his largest acquisitions in the U.S., including Fort Worth, Texas-based railroad Burlington Northern Santa Fe.

“I don’t know if he’s lucky, smart or patriotic, but it’s worked out for him,” Cliff Gallant, an analyst at KBW Inc., said in a phone interview. He estimates that Berkshire will post an operating profit of $1,750 a share for the second quarter, a 6.7 percent increase from a year earlier.

I try in my life to cling to an " Optimistic" point of view. However, there are times such as we are in now that it becomes very difficult to do so.  Warren Buffet, has NO CHOICE but to bet on a  U.S. recovery. His entire empire of wealth is based on it. He has to act like a " Cheer Leader" for all whom ...more

Goldendream  Keep in mind this is not the first time the future looked dire;  seeming like the end of the world.  Ok it could be LOL BUT to me reason says to  favor  the opinion that this is not  as dire as  it always seems like and  history says  this  frustrating cloud covered  economic situation will  clear up and the sun will shine ...more

First, thankyou Tentop1 for taking the time to respond.  I sincerely would like to think you are correct in your assumptions on where the badly needed recovery will develope from.  I am sure IMC and Berkshire are taking a long hard look at the international economic climate as ...more

Hello goldendream,I agree that the US has major issues to deal with, but IMC is a global player with sales not solely in the US, and rather much more success outside of America in the ever expanding Asian markets hence the production expansions here. The US is not a deciding factor for the deal. More and more wealth is being created outside North America and so with wealth comes the desire for a ...more

Thankyou for your input geologyfella.  Indeed a " Global" perspective is a more optomistic way of seeing these matters.  I suppose I am just very perturbed over the over all decline of the U.S.A  in so many area's. I am sure there are investors in WOF who can remember like myself much better economic ...more

geologyfella  has valid points.  IMC is  global  . Secondly  as to  Warren Buffets view of the future of  the USA I  highly doubt  his view is negative.  Matter of fact  he made comments or recently about his view of a resurgence in the US housing market  I would also note  most of his companies  are bread and butter  Bets ...more

Thankyou for your comments Tentops1.  Your right, this is unfortunately not the right form for this chat on general politics or economic. However, IMC I am sure is looking at all aspects of it's business as a part of DD and considering the long term profitablity of this deal.           ...more

As an aside from the issues at hand, I fail to see how you can equate Buffett and Gates with a buffoon like Donald Trump.  Also, before you come down too hard on either of these gentlemen, in the interest of fair play, you should look at their philanthropic activities and the vast amount of money they donate, literally billions.  In fact, when Buffett passes away, the bulk of his estate ...more

I thank you "Jobart" for your comments and I would once again like to thank the others  that responded to this " off topic" on this Bull Board. However, another forum is really nessesary to carry on this discussion. One where I can wear out my key board and computer expounding my political ...more

Trump graduated from one of the top business schools in Amercia.  Not sure why people dislike a guy who stands for America, and demands our politicians show some "tough love," instead of pandering to the left as Buffett and OBAMA and company.  It is a known fact , businesses are not striving in the overburdened environement of USA--just call them for their assessment.  ...more
