Merkel wants to exploit the "potential" of relations between Germany and Uruguay

President Tabar Vzquez will meet with the German chancellor next Wednesday

German Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to exploit the "untapped potential" in relations between her country and Uruguay on issues such as green economy, energy efficiency and trade.

Merkel referred to the Latin American country in her usual video message on Saturdays, focusing on this occasion in Uruguay due to the official visit to Berlin of its president, Tabar Vzquez, next week."Your visit is very important because our potential has not been exploited," he said.

The foreign minister explained that Uruguay is not excessively known in her country, where she is linked mainly "with football, and with good football," but indicated that there are other elements that unite both nations.

In her view, there are a number of foundations that Germany and Uruguay share, such as democratic values, the struggle for equality of women and respect for the environment; As well as a number of fields in which co-operation such as the green economy and trade could be increased.

In this regard, he said that it would be positive to re-establish contacts with Mercosur in the face of a possible trade agreement between the EU and the Latin American organization, although he acknowledged that this could be "complex".

Merkel was "in principle" in favor of the agreements to liberalize trade, but she defended that any pact must be "fair" and in favor of "interests" of both the EU and Mercosur.

The head of the German Government also highlighted the "interesting and positive evolution" that Uruguay has experienced in recent years and, in addition to the democratic, environmental and legal advances, the steps taken in the fight against poverty, something "exemplary among the countries Latin Americans. "

Finally, he indicated that he would take advantage of Vzquez's visit to hear firsthand the experience of Uruguay with the legalization of marijuana, although he ruled out that Germany will adopt a similar path.

Vzquez plans to meet with Merkel and German President Joachim Gauck on Wednesday and inaugurate Thursday the 15th edition of the Latin American Conference of the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK).

During his stay in Berlin, the business delegation that accompanies him - made up of about 60 businessmen - will attend Fruit Logistica, an important agricultural fair in the German capital, where Uruguayan participation is already common.

In addition, Vzquez plans to travel to Hamburg (northwest Germany) on Friday to participate in the conference "Uruguay: a reliable partner in Latin America", an initiative of the Lateinamerika Verein, a German business association with links in the subcontinent.

The trip of the Uruguayan president is part of a European tour that, between February 7 and 17, will take him, as well as Germany, Finland and Russia.

The former Uruguayan president, Jos Mujica, already visited Berlin in 2011, accompanied by a delegation of 40 businessmen.
