Article 5/17/17 Uruguay to export marijuana to Canada in 2018
It is expected to export 200 kilograms of marijuana for medicinal reasons. One of the two companies that produce the plant for the state, in order to supply consumers who want to buy the drug in pharmacies, signed agreements with two Canadian companies to provide 10% of its production to that country.
The destination of the marijuana that will leave Uruguay is for the production of medicinal compounds and not for recreational consumption.
It is the International Cannabis Corporation (ICC), which since November last year, is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and signed two export agreements one in February and another in April this year.
Government sources confirmed to Telemundo that the company applied for permits for the export of marijuana and its derivatives. In addition, they said it was part of their business plan from the time they went to the bid to become one of the suppliers of state marijuana.
They noted that the export is feasible to be carried out next year, as long as the requirements are met.
It should be noted that it is a controlled substance for entering the international drug list and therefore requires special permits from the International Narcotics Control Board.
ICC director Guillermo Delmonte said in an interview with a Canadian digital media that the focus of his company is not the sale of recreational marijuana at local level in Uruguay, but the export of the plant and its derivatives to other countries with Medicinal purposes. Among the destination countries hoping to add, Germany and Australia were mentioned.
ICC is authorized by the Uruguayan State to produce about 2,000 kilos per year, with the result that the export would be around 200 kilograms. However, in statements of authorities of the company to Canadian media, they were told that they would be able to produce up to 40,000 tons. Telemundo tried to contact ICC but received no response.
