100,000 tonnes of non-recyclable and non-compostab Enerkem staffing 70 per cent complete
January 17, 2013, Edmonton, AB - Enerkem says the challenging task of hiring more than 30 energy workers for its new Edmonton biofuels plant in a hot labour market is nearly accomplished.
“Right now, we have 70 per cent of the employees we need to operate the plant this year,” said Marie-Helene Labrie, vice-president of government affairs and communications for Enerkem in an Edmonton Journal article.
The Quebec-based developer of technology that converts municipal solid waste into syngas, is building a plant at Edmonton’s Waste Management Centre at the Clover Bar landfill.
The first of its kind, the plant will convert 100,000 tonnes of non-recyclable and non-compostable residential waste into 38 million litres of ethanol, which is blended into gasoline. The plant will also create methanol.
While Edmonton now diverts 60 per cent of residential waste from landfill, the Enerkem plant will raise that to 90 per cent.
Enerkem also announced an additional investment of $37 million from partners Waste Management of Canada Corp. and EB Investments. The two companies now have a total stake of $52 million in the venture. The City of Edmonton and Alberta Innovates are also key partners in the $132.5-million project.
