in your example the shorting on the first day would show as 50% short vol for the day and a net increase in the short position (up 500 k) and on the second day there would be a net reduction of 500k

Wide I believe you are correct! A better more clear example might be! One million shares of company X trades of which 500k shares are shorted. So short sales come up as 50% for that day.&

"The Globe uses IROC's numbers!" To reiterate, the Globe does not use IIROC's numbers. They use S3 Partners' data showing 26% float shorted.
