The Financial Post reports in its Tuesday edition that Questerre Energy recently persuaded Talisman Energy that Quebec could be Canada's next natural gas frontier. The Post's Claudia Cattaneo writes the companies plan to drill one well next year in the St. Lawrence Lowlands near Ste-Sophie, a parish south of the St. Lawrence River. The Quebec government is so eager to attract oil and gas exploration the top-consuming province has some of the best fiscal terms in the world. As well, gas fetches a premium to prices on the New York Merc because transport is cheap. One of the targets the companies are pursuing is an extension of Talisman's Trenton Black River play in Appalachia, across the Canada/U.S. border. There, Talisman is producing 105 million to 115 million cubic feet of gas a day. The U.S. play is busy, but the trend is untapped on the Quebec side. The other is a deeper target in a large sandstone structure. The third is a tight gas play. Each target has the potential for several hundred billion cubic feet of gas. Talisman official Barry Nelson said his firm plans to spend $4-million to $6-million in Quebec next year, including the cost of drilling the well, seismic and land.
