Space Planner Featured Among Microsoft's Industry Partner Solutions Showcasing Latest in Retail Technology Innovation
Versatile Systems Inc. (TSX VENTURE:VV) today announced that its Space Planner application will be one of Microsoft's featured industry partner solutions within the X06 Marketplace Store of the Future at this year's National Retail Federation (NRF) Annual Convention & EXPO to be held in New York City, January 15 - 18, 2006.
The NRF Annual Convention & EXPO is the retail industry's premier product showcase event. A key exhibit on the expo hall floor is this year's X06 Marketplace store of the future, combining store design with the latest in retail technology and innovations. Versatile's Space Planner, which takes advantage of the form factor and portability offered by a Tablet PC and active pen together with the power of Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system will be featured in the employee/management workplace area, highlighting back of the store concepts that demonstrate how seamless collaboration across the store can raise productivity, drive down costs and improve customer service.
"Versatile's Space Planner is a great fit for this year's X06 store of the future, displaying empowering mobile business solutions for field associates based on Microsoft technologies and in-line with Microsoft Smarter Retailing," said David Gruehn, Director and Industry Manager for Microsoft's Retail & Hospitality Industry Unit. "Versatile's Space Planner application highlights an innovative use of Pen Tablet technology and demonstrates how mobile workers can create customized shelf space planning diagrams in real-time - a new concept that will appeal to retailers and merchandisers of all sizes."
Space Planner allows field merchandising and sales representatives to create and display shelf space planning diagrams (Planograms) while at a customer location. A correctly designed Planogram allows merchants and product distributors to maximize both sales dollars and customer satisfaction by optimizing the use of retail shelf space. This capability is of significant value to companies who sell their products in environments where size and shape of shelf and storage areas can vary based on the nature of the store.
Planograms have traditionally been created and pre-printed at a distributors head office, based on a generic pre-set shelving scheme that has been determined in advance. These Planograms could not accommodate retailers who have shelf layouts that might deviate from the pre-set shelving scheme.
Retailers who display their products in custom storage environments, such as the display of chilled products in a cooler, can now have the optimum storage and visual display layout designed at the retail location. This "on the spot" Planogram takes into consideration the height, width and depth of the shelving where the product is to be displayed; it also considers the product properties including size, market share and the purchaser demographics of the region.
After creating the custom Planogram on the Tablet PC, the merchandising representative, using a portable printer, can print a copy of it on stain and tear resistant acetate. The Planogram is left at the retail location so that subsequent deliveries of product can be stocked and displayed according to the predetermined plan. This solution significantly reduces planning work from the head office and maximizes the use of the merchandiser's time in the field. In turn, both customer and supplier realize improved sales and business process benefits.
