"Much ado has and still is being made by news articles as to Roasting
bottlenecks causing high Mo prices. This is a bottle neck for Copper by
product Moly only as it is far more an intensive and costly process than
the Roasting of Primary Moly w/o Sulfides. A lb of pure Moly (no
sulfides) can be roasted for as little as $0.50 p/lb or less. As for Copper
based Mo it can be as much as $5.00 p/lb to Roast. Chemical leaching of
impurities etc and extended processes add greatly to costs. Endako &
Thompson Crks US operations both have excess capacity at present, but
only for clean Moly free of Copper Sulfide impurities. They don't roast
by product Moly. From my personal observations and discussions with
industry participants, I believe Moly prices will return into the $30.00
range or higher when it is realized that all the Copper producers have
ramped up high grading of Copper/Moly pit operations over last 18 months
to capitalize on high Cu/Mo prices and now must return to lower grade
portions of the pit operations. Phelps Dodge Copper/Moly production
(announced today) was already down 37M /lbs in 4th Q /05. Soon this
scenario of high grading by ALL copper producers will be evident and be
reflected in higher Moly prices. IMHO"
