Rio said it had spent $250 million on exploration in 2005, compared with $190 million in 2004.
It is about to start exploring at two newly acquired projects - the La Granga copper project in Peru and the Jarandol concession in Serbia.
At 1550 Rio Tinto shares had lost $1.54 to $70.40 in a generally weaker market.
