Iranian militiamen protest at British embassy

Iranian militiamen protest at British embassyIranian militiamen protest at British embassy Sunday, February 26, 2006 - ©2005 IranMania.com LONDON, February 26 (IranMania) - Hundreds of Iranian hardliners marched on the British embassy in Tehran on Sunday in the latest protest over the bombing of a sacred Shiite Muslim shrine in neighbouring Iraq, AFP reported. The protestors, mainly from the student wing of the official Basij militia, chanted slogans including "Death to Britain, Death to Israel, and Death to America" and torched the US and Danish flags. "British embassy must be shut; Sunni-Shiite unity!" were also chanted during the protest, AFP added. There was no repeat of the usual stone throwing at the leafy downtown compound, and the crowd left the area peacefully after offering their prayers in the middle of the street and bringing traffic to a complete halt. Around 100 anti-riot police were deployed on the streets around the mission, a frequent target of protests by regime supporters. Several other European embassies in Tehran have been attacked in recent weeks over the publication in a Danish and other European newspapers of caricatures depicting the Muslim Prophet Mohammed, AFP noted. Shiite-ruled Iran has declared a seven-day mourning period following Wednesday's partial destruction of the Samarra shrine, with the Islamic republic's leaders pointing the finger at the US and Israel.
