RE: FP article ..eljoro"aware of the potential for political upheaval in Peru"
Upheavel??? I think not!! Let's put that into perspective here.
Yes Humala, a leftist, with a conspicuous history is leading the polls.
BUT
This pales in comarison to the Peruvian governments of the 80s and 90s.
Furthermore
His support is mainly outside of Lima. Lima is the capital and business centre of Peru. Mining contributes more than any industry to Peru's GDP.
Newmont and Barrick have been operating (exploring and producing) in Peru since early 80's.
So no matter who wins, it will be business as usual in Peru. The worst that will likely happen is that any gold mined will cost a little more to produce becuase of higher royalties/taxes ... worst case scenario if Humala is a complete lunatic ... the project takes a little longer because in Peru a president cannot serve consecutive terms.
This is all IMO of course ... to quote an old Talking Heads tune ... "Don't Worry About the Government!!"
