MEXICO CITY - López Obrador calls for change
Leftist presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Sunday said his supporters will consider drafting a new constitution for Mexico, saying the country needs a ``radical transformation.''
López Obrador has said he will never recognize a victory by ruling-party candidate Felipe Calderon and will declare himself as the alternative president.
''We don't want cosmetic changes,'' López Obrador told thousands gathered in Mexico City's main plaza, the Zocalo, where he has been sleeping in a tent for five weeks to protest the July 2 presidential elections. He and his backers erected protest camps in the heart of the capital in support of his fight for Mexico's highest office.
His campaign manager Jesus Ortega said Saturday López Obrador's supporters in Congress will stop Calderon from being sworn in on Dec. 1 and claimed victory for having stopped President Vicente Fox from giving his state-of-the-nation speech to Congress on Friday.
Leftist legislators demanding a recount in the elections stormed the congressional chambers' stage, forcing Fox to forgo his speech and hand in a written annual report instead. It was the first time in modern history a Mexican president has not delivered his yearly speech to lawmakers.
With the Federal Electoral Tribunal likely to declare Calderon, a former energy secretary, president-elect this week, the country's political crisis is expected to escalate.
López Obrador, who claims fraud and dirty tricks robbed him of the presidency, has called supporters to a meeting to plot a strategy on Sept. 16 in the Zocalo -- the same day and place Mexico's army stages an Independence Day parade.
The former Mexico City mayor also plans to hold a ''democratic convention'' that day in which he will declare his parallel government, signaling he plans to rule from the streets.
López Obrador said delegates will arrive in Mexico City from across the country and would also decide on calling an assembly to draft a constitution.

It is one thing to demand a recount. But "rule from the streets", "parallel government", and "draft a (new) constitution"? At what point does he and his supporters say we're going too far and at what point does Mexican law define all of this as illegal? BNS management is planning to spend hundreds of millions to expand their Mexican branch network which they are in a better position than shareholders to evalute in terms of risk/reward but then again, some guy living in a tent on the street ultimately may be "The MAN" who can decide everything. This has to end.
