What does gem, near-gem and non-gem quality mQ. What does gem, near-gem and non-gem quality mean?
A gem quality stone is transparent and is best suited for a gem quality cut stone. Near gem quality stones are translucent and can be used for cut stones, but usually sell for a much lower value than gem-quality stones. Near gem quality material is used for making cabochons, a rounded polished stone. Non-gem quality is opaque material and can be used for carving or for beads.
