I looked at the softwood supply from Siberia too. As I understand it though, there is a major transportation problem to get that lumber to the Chinese market. The cost of ocean freight from Canada is lower than rail to China from Siberia even if that was developed.
I also understand that the timber in Siberia is of low volume per acre resulting in high cost of infrastructure development and logging. Given that, I believe that Canadian softwood can compete with Siberia.
Another thing that I found during my research was the growth of Radiata Pine plantations in the southern hemisphere: Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Chile and more. That product has a 30 year growth cycle and could be a far greater threat to Canadian softwood lumber.
Regardless, I believe CFP will be successful and grow substantially in my investment life cycle.
