Philippines Opens Up

JOHANNESBURG (Business Day) -- The Philippines is making fresh overtures to the mining community to woo back investors to the country's vast unexplored resources potential.
A number of South African gold miners are active in the Pacific Rim and at least one is in the early stages of developing a mine there.
The Philippines is reported to hold the fifth-largest reserves of copper and gold in the world. But political upheavals, environmental problems and legal uncertainties have deterred investment in the past few years.
Now President Gloria Arroyo wants to attract foreign investment in mining to boost growth.
