RE: Some are frustrated with waiting ! Interesting comments from everyone, so I will add my own experience to the discussion.
Looking back over the last few years, I have discovered that it would have been much better just to hang on to my losers. Some of the stocks which I sold early (such as Ipsco, Husky, Fronteer, Telus and many more) increased by huge multiples after I impatiently dumped them.
In fact, with only one exception, all the stocks I sold, eventually recovered to be decent winners.
The moral is simple - if you have a faltering stock but you really believe it's a good company, then it's best to hold on for as long as it takes, because the old saying is true - "every dog has its day!".
The real danger with loss-selling is the psychological reluctance to buy-back the same stock just when it starts to do really well. Holding onto the stock and forgetting about it for a while, eliminates this decision.
PS. I can give one really good example. I bought Connacher Oil at $0.40 and was horrified when it went down to $0.20 (that's 50%) but I just kept it anyway and it climbed to $6.00 very suddenly. The reason I kept it was because I just liked the story and I was sure that eventually evryone else would too. My patience was rewarded.
