First of all gold companies usually trade at a premium when compared to base metal companies when it comes to in situ value.
Second, and even more important, not all the ounces (or pounds) are created equal. You may have 100 billion dollars worth of copper, zinc or what have you at 0.01%, or maybe the grade is good but the deposit is buried under 200 meters of waste rock that is so uneconomical to extract.
In situ value does not tell the whole story.
